Пампрепий Грамматик в Афинах: к истории отношений интеллектуалов и городской знати во 2-й пол. V в.

В работе предпринимается попытка освещения афинского периода жизни грамматика 2-й половины V в. Пампрепия в контексте отношений афинских интеллектуалов и городской знати. Фигура Пампрепия вызывает особый интерес в связи с тем, что этот египтянин, заслуживший у Дамаския прозвище Тифона-чудовища, сделал имперскую карьеру, добившись влияния в столице. Он пал жертвой мятежа Илла и Леонтия, погибнув от рук своих же заговорщиков. Необычно его возвышение с позиции грамматика, так как этот слой интеллектуалов считался самым бедным и самым низким. По всей видимости, именно афинский период стал ключевым в возвышении Пампрепия благодаря удачной женитьбе и сближению с сенаторской знатью города. Афины позднеантичного времени имели особый неформальный статус культурной и образовательной столицы, а высшие школы были важнейшим источником дохода для городской общины. Такие сенаторы, как Феаген, стремились приобщиться к интеллектуалам и извлечь из этого выгоду и укрепление авторитета. Пампрепий был вынужден покинуть Афины из-за личного конфликта с влиятельным Феагеном. Специфика процесса византинизации в Афинах проявляется в том, что старая городская знать в лице Феагена побеждает внешнюю новую знать (интеллектуалов).
