This article presents the first scholarly biography of Mikhail Arkadyevich Stolypin, the elder brother of the renowned statesman P.A. Stolypin, who had long been considered a semi-legendary figure. The research is based on an extensive source base from various archives, such as the Russian State Historical Archive (RGIA), the Russian State Military Historical Archive (RGVIA), the Central State Historical Archive of St. Petersburg (TsGIA SPb), the newspaper collection of the Library of the Academy of Sciences (BAN), and other repositories. The article consists of several sections reflecting the main stages of M.A. Stolypin's life. The methodology of this research involves the comprehensive application of source study, textual, and historical-anthropological analysis to reconstruct the circumstances of the 1882 duel between M.A. Stolypin and I.N. Shakhovskoy. The analysis of the biography of P.A. Stolypin's elder brother and the circumstances of his death in the duel reveals the crucial influence of this family tragedy on the formation of the personality, worldview, and subsequent life path of the future reformer.
