Abstract

The concept of “ethos” today has a broad interdisciplinary meaning. It denotes moral values, beliefs, norms of behavior and ideals that are characteristic of a certain group of people or society as a whole in a specific historical era. In that sense, the category of ethos is applicable in the field of historical knowledge. As the main sources of the study in determining the ethos of the clergy in the Late Antique period were used the collections of letters of the Church Fathers Ambrose of Milan, Jerome of Stridon, Augustine of Hippo and bishops Paulinus of Nola, Sidonius Apollinaris, Avitus of Vienne. Correspondence, filled with a lively, continuous stream of messages makes it possible to reconstruct the Church leaders’ ideals and lifestyle using specific examples. Analyzing the correspondence and some other sources, the authors conclude that the ethos of the clergy from the fourth to the sixth century included such features as mediation between believers and authorities, making important political decisions, and managing social processes. The clergy taught spiritual truths to believers, played an important role in maintaining the unity of believers and in shaping public consciousness based on religious values. The bishop's lifestyle was distinguished by severity and asceticism, characterized by moderation and the desire for spiritual perfection.
