Abstract

The article examines the specifics of the form and content of the «Ecclesiastical History» of Zacharias of Mytilene. This work has not been in the field of vision of researchers for a long time and was discovered in the Vatican Apostolic Library only in the 70s of the 19th century. The «History» of Zacharias ends in 491 and, in its structure, is a logical continuation of the work of the same name by Socrates Scholasticus. After Zachariah's death, the work was revised by an unknown author, who translated the «Ecclesiastical History» from Greek into Aramaic and it was continued to 569. The continuance is known to us today under the name «Chronicle of Pseudo-Zachariah». The original Greek text of the source has not been preserved. Zachariah's work is a unique and informative historical source, reflecting in sufficient detail the events in the history of the Church that took place in the middle of the fifth century and related to Monophysite disputes; from the source we can also gather information of a non-Church nature during this period.
