Post-Soviet space in foreign policy priorities of Ukraine and Kazakhstan

The collapse of the USSR led to significant changes both in the system of international relations and on the map of Eurasia. Among the newly independent states that formed the region of the post-Soviet space, a special place is occupied by Ukraine and Kazakhstan, which received similar «starting positions» after gaining independence. At the same time, the post-Soviet space was an important area for the implementation of the goals and objectives of the foreign policy course, but the countries adhered to completely different models for achieving their own goals in this region. Based on a comparison of the provisions of doctrinal foreign policy documents, as well as the practical activities of states, the authors propose to identify common and differing features of the courses of Ukraine and Kazakhstan in relation to the post-Soviet space. Despite the apparent incompatibility and geographical remoteness of these two countries from each other, they have repeatedly acted as catalysts for positive or destructive regional changes, influenced the development of certain political and economic processes and otherwise affected the entire post-Soviet space or its constituent parts. The study of the problem made it possible to determine the features of the formation and implementation of foreign policy courses of Ukraine and Kazakhstan in the post-Soviet region as well as to identify key problems and achievements. The results allow us to conclude about a more effective model of formation and implementation of Kazakhstan's foreign policy, which was based on consistent development and long-term implementation, while the priorities of the foreign policy of Ukraine were largely determined not by doctrinal documents and state interests but by the preferences and values of presidents, political and economic elites.
