Целью данной статьи является изучение новой американской политики в регионе, основанной на политике преемственности в условиях смены американского руководства, а также анализ направления вектора политического курса, стремящегося не только к установлению, сохранению контроля над государствами региона и борьбе с терроризмом, но и к противостоянию внешним вызовам (прежде всего России) в регионе. Таким образом, статья затрагивает новые аспекты американской вовлеченности в регион, которые сформировались после терактов 11 сентября 2001 года и основывались на географическом положении региона и борьбе с терроризмом, а также на попытках сохранить инициативы, начатые предыдущей администрацией Клинтона, такие как демократизация и гуманитарная политика в различных ее аспектах.
