Mental Geography of India: Constructing the Image of a Distant Land in Ancient Roman Tradition

Studies on the perception of ”foreign space” in historical research began to emerge in the late 20th century, following the ”cultural turn” in historiography, with pioneering works focusing on socalled ”mental maps” of the imagined space. Through the lens of the mental map theory, this paper examines cognitive models of spatial perception as recorded in the works by key Roman authors. The study primarily analyzes three main categories of geographical names: hydronyms (river names), oronyms (names of mountains), and oeconyms (city names). Particular emphasis is placed on identifying patterns in the frequency and modes of referencing these geographical objects, enabling the reconstruction of consistent patterns in the Roman perception of Indian space. The localization of India in the East, despite variations in interpretation among different authors, was more symbolic than strictly geographical. This image, rooted in Greek sources, remained persistent even as knowledge of the region expanded, reinforcing India’s status as “the edge of the world”.
