Towards the Ethnic History of Armenia: The Ethno-Territorial Features of Modern Armenians

The analysis of morphological variability in modern human populations is one of the cornerstone issues in physical anthropology. The present study focuses on examining the morphological characteristics of Armenian ethno-territorial groups from the territory of Armenia and adjacent regions. The purpose of the work was to examine the anthropological composition of the Armenian population by means of statistical analysis, to find out the validity of identifying certain anthropological variants in the region. Armenian groups exhibit a clear affinity with the characteristics of the Near Eastern anthropological race. These populations display intergroup variability in somatological traits.Nevertheless, an analysis of intrapopulation differentiation reveals that, despite existing differences, the predominant features are those of similarity and internal cohesion among the studied groups. Among neighboring populations, Georgian groups are morphologically the closest to the Armenian populations. However, the internal connections among Armenian groups are more pronounced than their affinities with Georgian groups, and this pattern is mirrored among the Georgian populations themselves. At the same time, certain ethno-territorial groups exhibit deviations from this general trend, forming alternative models of interpopulation similarity.
