The rate of urbanization worldwide is increasing every year, leading to more socio-political issues and affecting quality of people's life. The speed of this process often prevents governments and local authorities from responding quickly to crises and the needs of individual cities. Activists and civil society organizations can positively influence the timely resolution of many urbanization challenges in collaboration with international organizations and through proper interaction. In this respect, the cooperation between Brazilian civil society and The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is an exemplary success story. Overcoming inequality through inclusion contributes to improving living standards. Based on an analysis of UN-Habitat documents and projects initiated by citizens to address urbanization issues and improve the lives of favela residents, the author concludes that this form of collaboration is promising and aids in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It can serve as a successful model for other countries and regions.
