In this article, the author analyzes the professional activity of Theophilus of Alexandria, the greatest representative of the 4th century Alexandrian Church. His role as a Bishop is noted, as well as his contribution to the development of the intellectual foundations of the Christian faith (doctrinal design of Easter celebrations dates, the struggle against Origen’s legacy). Special attention is paid to the problem of Theophilus' relationship with John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople, whose political struggle left an imprint on Theophilus's reputational indicators in the Eastern Christian Church. In the article, the author stresses Theophilus's significant contribution not only to the church policy of the Eastern Christian world of the 4th century A.D., but also to the process of forming a new intellectual paradigm of Alexandria. The work shows that it was mostly the polemic of the Patriarch of Alexandria against Origen that marked the beginning of the subsequent condemnation of the Origenists at the church councils of the 6th century.
