The article examines the main characteristics of the hero in Plutarch's work “Parallel Lives” through the Greek paideia. Firstly, the author focuses on the cultural origins of this phenomenon, namely the connection with such concepts as "ideal" and "image". Secondly, Plutarch's approach to creativity is considered and the influence of ancient philosophy on his views. Thirdly, the author analyzes the place of paideia in the system of elements used by the Chaeronean writer when creating the image of the Hero. The article reveals the meaning of the “virtue” concept which occupies an important place in this system. It shows the connection between the aristocratic ideals of personality education and the image of a man of the Classical era created by Plutarch. The Hero’s negative character traits are often closely adjacent to those spiritual qualities that cause admiration. The author concludes that the ancient educational ideals glorified in Homer's Iliad have perseverance and continue to influence the intellectual culture of the Hellenic world throughout ancient history. Due to Plutarch, they take their rightful place in the intellectual culture of the entire European civilization.
