Abstract

The article, based on an analysis of British and German foreign policy documents and materials of the Archive of the Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation, examines the problems of the Mediterranean in the context of the international aspects of the Spanish Civil War 1936–1939, at its final stage (late 1937 – early 1939). The authors emphasize that the Mediterranean, having met the beginning of the Spanish tragedy in a state of complex, unresolved both international and bilateral relations, turned into a serious hotbed of international tension by the end of the war in Spain of 1936–1939. The Spanish war caused a further deepening of international contradictions in the region, strengthening the tendencies of both the "Mediterranean appeasement" itself and the bloc policy. The results of the study show that having moved the Mediterranean from the periphery to the center of European politics for some time, the events in Spain in 1936–1939 forced the leading European countries to place new accents in their policy in this region. England and France lost not only in Spain and in the Mediterranean. Their defeat in Europe became a matter of time.
