Political Media Agenda: an Empirical Analysis of News Headlines

Abstract

The rapid digitalization of the political and communicative space actualizes the matter of the formation, distribution and consumption of news content in modern society. Therefore, today the scientific community researches the issues related to the agenda formation, its content and specific characteristics. Despite the considerable interest on the scientifical community to the topic of the agenda, the question of the various agendas interaction (political, public, media) with each other remains little studied. In particular, few researches explore the topic of the political content of public and media agendas.The purpose of this study is to identify the degree of politicization of the traditional and modern media agenda and compare its indicators with the degree of politicization of the social media agenda, reflecting the interests of society and the features of public agenda. In addition, the objectives of the study are to analyze the dynamics of changes in the degree of politicization of the traditioanl and modern media and social media agendas during a certain period of monitoring and to analyze the specifics of the political content of the agendas. The conceptual basis of the study is the agenda-setting theory. The main applied methods in the research are comparative analysis and non-directional type of qualitative-quantitative content analysis. As a result of the study, it was found that the highest share of political news headlines is presented in the media agenda of two Internet-media. In social media, among the most popular news headlines, the proportion of political headlines was less than one third. Based on the analysis of graphs of the changes dynamics in the degree of agendas politicization, it was concluded that there is a certain general, political, informational agenda in the Russian public space (at least at the content-thematic (first) level). The results of the study allow us to expand existing ideas about the degree of politicization of the agendas of traditional and Internet- media, and also help to clarify the degree of politicization of the public agenda in modern Russian society.
