Abstract

The city of Salamis (Constance) is one of the two main cities, along with Paphos, of Ancient and Early Byzantine Cyprus. It is also one of the most important archaeological sites of the island. Its history in the ancient and early Byzantine periods, as well as the topography of the city and the role of the main monuments are the subject of this article, which continues the theme of the historical regionalism of the Eastern Mediterranean (and Cyprus) in Roman and Early Byzantine times. After the tragic events of 1974 and the division of the island, the settlement ended up on the northern side under the control of the unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. After a long break, the excavations of Salamis were resumed by Turkish archaeologists. Among others, new monuments of the Roman and Early Byzantine times were discovered, the layout of the city and elements of its historical topography were refined. This article is intended to summarize and update the current ideas about Salamis in order to clarify the place and role of this city in the life of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.
