Soviet Atheist Propaganda in the 1920s–1930s: Clergy as Illegal Producers and Distributors of Alcoholic Beverages (Based on Anti-Religious Periodicals)

This article analyzes the attempts by Soviet atheists to create a negative image of the Orthodox and Jewish clergy in the public consciousness as producers and distributors of alcoholic beverages in the 1920s and 1930s. The creation and dissemination of a negative image of the clergy in the public consciousness was carried out with the aim of desacralizing the clergy and religion, which, in turn, was an important aspect of the antireligious activities of Soviet atheists. This study is based on archival documents and currently little-known antireligious periodicals from the period under study. The analysis of the sources used is based on general scientific and specialized historical methods: the historical-systemic method, the ideographic method, and the typological method. The authors analyze publications in the antireligious press in which the clergy are portrayed as producers and distributors of alcoholic beverages, identifying patterns and highlighting the specific features of these reports. The authors provide a general assessment of the propaganda activities of Soviet atheists aimed at discrediting the clergy in the eyes of the Soviet public.
