THE HISTORY OF THE ARMENIAN CHURCHES IN AVLABARI, THE NEIGHBORHOOD OF TBILISI

The migratory flows caused by different historical events remain the distinctive feature of the history of the Armenian people. Armenians left their homeland and formed the Armenian communities in many countries throughout the world, as a result of migration. Living away from their homeland, they were forced to focus on the preservation of their national identity. The Armenian Church made a significant contribution to this process. The aim of this article is to determine the role of the church in the lifestyle of Armenians living outside the homeland. The article is dedicated to the presence of Armenians in Avlabari, the neighborhood of Tbilisi. Many Armenians migrated to this neighborhood and constructed their own churches there. Moreover, this article provides information on the present condition of the buildings and the attitude of Armenians toward this aspect. The article was based in resources in Armenian and Georgian languages. As a result it is possible to observe the transformation of the Armenian Church into an educational institute that nowadays assists the Armenian people in keeping their cultural and religious traditions alive, preserving and using their own language.
