Abstract

The article examines the unveiling of the Monument to Tsar Liberator Alexander II in Sofia in 1907 as a landmark event in Russian–Bulgarian relations in the early twentieth century. Based on previously unpublished archival documents, diplomatic correspondence, military records, and contemporary newspapers, it reconstructs the preparation, programme, and political context of the celebrations. Particular attention is paid to the interaction between official commemorative practices and popular expressions of gratitude toward Russia, as well as to the Bulgarian government's domestic and international objectives. The article argues that the ceremonies went beyond commemorating the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and became an instrument of symbolic diplomacy and historical memory, intended to reinforce bilateral relations and strengthen Russia’s political influence in the Balkans. The findings reveal the dual character of the celebrations, combining genuine public sentiment with the strategic use of commemorative politics by both states.
