Abstract

The article analyzes sources containing information about pilgrimages to Alexandria and its environs. Key works of Latin topographic literature are analyzed. The study confirms the functioning of pilgrimage routes in the Eastern Mediterranean, which remained active even after the Arab conquest of the region. A significant number of references to Alexandria and Lower Egypt in topographic literature allows us to conclude that Alexandria occupied a worthy place in terms of the number and influence of Christian shrines. The evidence left by travelers provides an “outsider view” of the specifics of the region's development during the period under study. The research shows that the works of Latin topographical literature are of value in the study of the history of Alexandria.
