O.O. Krueger, the Second Head of the Ancient World History Department at the Historical Faculty of Leningrad State University (1938)

This article is devoted to Otto Oskarovich Krueger (1893–1967), a well-known Leningrad papyrologist and epigrapher who worked before the Second World War. In the 21st century, the Russian historical science is experiencing an increased interest in historiography. The academic and administrative activities of O.O. Krueger, who worked in various Leningrad institutions, have already been addressed in some articles. However, only once does the memoirist V.N. Darienko mention that he headed a department at Leningrad State University (2002). This line of O.O. Krueger’s activity is discussed in the article. His life and work are reconstructed using the method of historical biography. Based on archival documents, it has been established that O.O. Krueger was in charge of the Department of Ancient World History at the Faculty of History at Leningrad State University for a very short time. The author concludes that O.O. Krueger stood at the origins of Soviet papyrology, but due to difficult life circumstances, he was unable to create his own scientific school, and he had no famous students.
