The Byzantine Commonwealth: A Critique of D.D. Obolensky's Concept

This article continues a series of publications devoted to the study of the frontier policy of the Byzantine Empire during the reign of the Macedonian Dynasty in the 9th-11th centuries, an important part of which was the relationship with neighboring semi-independent principalities and peoples. The central place in the historiography of this issue is occupied by the concept of D. D. Obolensky. The paper attempts to critically evaluate this concept based on an analysis of written sources from that period. It has been established that despite the ideas of the Romans about their neighbors, the degree of subjectivity of the border principalities and peoples differed from region to region and depended on a number of factors – geography, history of the region, the presence of an alternative pole of power, and mutual economic interests. On the political plane, the Orthodox faith and titular politics were of secondary importance, and equating "spiritual sons" with the vassals of the emperor looks unnecessarily far-fetched.
