Pope Xystus (Sixtus) III and the Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of Rome over Eastern Illyricum According to the Collectio Thessalonicensis

The subject of this study is a collection of letters of Pope Xystus (Sixtus) III (432–440), preserved in the Collectio Thessalonicensis – a collection of papal documents compiled in the 9th century and containing papal letters from the 4th–5th centuries to the bishops of Eastern Illyricum. The article aims to identify the context and circumstances of the composition of these letters, as well as to analyse their content with the aim of reconstructing papal policy toward the Churches of Eastern Illyricum. The letters under analysis are addressed to Metropolitan Perigenes of Corinth, members of the Council of Thessalonica, the bishops of Illyricum in general, and Proclus of Constantinople. They focus on issues of the authority of the Metropolitan of Thessalonica, whom the popes supported and promoted as Primate of Illyricum, the ecclesiastical court in Illyricum, the right of appeal, and the prerogatives of the Roman See. The author of the article concludes that Pope Xystus sought to eliminate the authority of provincial metropolitans in Illyricum, transfer prerogatives of primacy to the Primate of Thessalonica, and assert the prerogatives of the Roman See as the supreme court of appeal. The article also documents papal attempts to intervene in the affairs of Asia Minor. The findings make it possible to conclude that Xystus’ policy consistently continued that of his predecessors toward Illyricum and shared similar characteristics with their policies toward the Churches of Southern Gaul.
