Abstract

During the Roman and Late Antique periods, the Latin language served as the language of official communication in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. According to a common view, its use in the Greek-speaking regions of the Roman East was generally limited and ceased in the 4th – 5th centuries, following the disintegration of the political unity of the Roman Empire. This article is devoted to the problem of the using of Latinisms in the Greek epigraphy of the Cilicia and Isauria. In our view, the study will allow us to rethink the depth of Graeco-Latin language contact between the 1st century BC and the 7th century AD.
The analysis of the inscriptions has made it possible to divide the discovered Latinisms into several thematic groups, as well as to highlight the characteristic features of borrowing and adaptation of Latinisms in the epigraphy of these regions, such as hybrid calques, morphological integration, and others. It is shown that borrowings of the names of military and civil professions demonstrate an example of the prolonged influence of Latin on the Greek linguistic milleu.
