Image-Building Strategies of the “Russian World“ Broadcast through the Social Media of the Heads of New Russian Federal Subjects

The article examines the social media mechanisms of intergrating four new Russia’s subjects – the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, the Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions – into the space of the „Russian World“. In this paper, the latter is determined as the idea of a transnational community unified by language and culture, common values, unity of religion and belonging to the Homeland. The authors analyze the role of the heads of these regions as media representatives whose social media activities form the basic for the virtual identity of the “Russian World“. The main research methods were quantitative content analysis with elements of discourse analysis. Methodological frames are based on the principle of multiple coding and include three analytical axes: the publication topic, the ideological load and the image-building strategy. The study is aimed at identifying key image-building narratives used by regional elites to strengthen civilizational identity in the context of geopolitical changes after 2022.
