The Initial Gothic Expedition of Belisarius in the Context of the Empire Restoration Efforts

The study is aimed at a comprehensive analysis of the first stage of the Gothic wars, a series of armed conflicts which had their ups and downs and lasted for decades. Their initial stage revealed Belisarious’s military talent and showed the degree of adaptation of Byzantinian battlecraft, as well as that of the Goths, to the conduct of hostilities with a new enemy. The author searches for reasons for the commanders’ success and failures and studies the interaction between Belisarius and Narses. The paper also attempts to understand the role of the first Gothic campaign of 535–540 both in the context of further war with the Ostrogothic Kingdom and in respect to the policy of rebuilding the Empire.
