The current political process in the EU countries is characterized by a crisis of classical parties. The author provides an analysis of the causes and evolution of the phenomenon of populism within the framework of the Italian party and political system. Populism as an ideology of an “anti-politics” has been a characteristic feature of the political system of the Italian Republic since the very beginning. The main goal of populist parties is to reassemble political institutions and strengthen the mechanisms of direct democracy. The study contains an analysis of the manifestos of the League and the Five Star Movement parties in the 2018 and 2022 elections as examples of right-wing and left-wing populism. The author concludes that Italy's populist parties have abandoned their most radical demands and become more moderate. The League has moved from a regionalist right-wing party to the format of a nationwide right-wing populist force. The Five Star Movement had begun as a protest format of a «anti-politics», but then turned into a stable structure with a left-wing populist orientation. The institutionalization of right-wing and left-wing populism can lead to disillusionment of voters and the emergence of new populist projects.
