Policy of the Russian Federation towards the Republic of Iraq during the Iraqi Crisis of 2003: History of the Issue

The relevance of the subject is conditioned by significant influence of the 2003 Iraqi crisis on international relations and global security. The article analyzes the position and policy of the Russian Federation in connection with the USA military campaign and its allies against Iraq. The author details key aspects of the Russian foreign policy strategy, including adherence to the principles of international law, defense of Iraqi sovereignty, and counteraction to unilateral actions that violate the decisions of the UN Security Council. The reasons for the growing tension in Russian-American relations against the backdrop of the crisis are investigated, as well as Russia's economic interests in Iraq. It is noted that Russian policy on the Iraqi issue was aimed at finding diplomatic solutions and preventing a humanitarian catastrophe. Russia's position reflected the desire to develop non-interference in the affairs of third countries in accordance with the postulates of the vision of a multipolar world order, which was threatened by the unilateral actions of the United States. Russia's diplomatic activity at that period aimed at preventing the destruction of international norms and minimizing the consequences of the armed scenario.
