Abstract

The article is focused on the historiography of the Roman foreign policy of “friendship” in the Bosporan Kingdom. Despite numerous studies devoted to the problem of the Roman presence in the region, the topic of amicitia Caesaris et populi Romani in publications has so far been studied ad hoc, applicable only to some rulers of the Bosporan Kingdom, or completely unjustifiably omitted. A manifestation of the Roman amicitia policy may be found in the epithets φιλόκαισαρ and φιλορώμαιος, which were used in the titulature of the Bosporan dynasts up until the 4th century AD. A detailed study of royal titles is a methodologically necessary approach in analyzing the development and nature of royal power in the Bosporus. The presented review of the historiography shows that in contemporary research literature  there are two main approaches to the problem. The first one associates the acquisition of the titles φιλόκαισαρ and φιλορώμαιος by the Bosporan rulers with the existence of a certain legally formalized procedure. The second one, on the contrary, fundamentally rejects such formalism and interprets the titles φιλόκαισαρ and φιλορώμαιος as a demonstration of the general direction of the policy of one or another ruler. The historiography review allows a conclusion that, taking into account the entire state of available sources, it is only comprehensive research on the Bosporan φιλορώμαιοι and φιλοκαίσαρες, that may provide definitive answers to a number of existing questions on this problem. Unfortunately, such research has not yet been implemented in the Russian classical studies.
