The Defeat of the SS Assault Brigade "Charlemagne" During the Berlin Offensive Operation of the Soviet Troops (April-May 1945)

The article analyzes the circumstances of the defeat by Soviet troops (units of the 1st Guards Tank Army, 5th Shock Army, 8th Guards Army) of the French SS assault brigade "Charlemagne", included in the SS division "Nordland", involved by the German command in April 1945 in the defense of Berlin. The conditions for the formation of a French unit and its transfer to the capital of the Reich are shown. The military operations of the Soviet troops against the SS formations in the south-east and in the central sector of the defense of Berlin have been reconstructed. It is indicated that groups of French "Faust" were practically destroyed by units of the Red Army during the battles for the city center, and the survived two dozen soldiers ended their combat path on the outskirts of the last stronghold of resistance - the Reich Chancellery. It is noted that with the surrender of the Berlin garrison on May 2, 1945, the last French "defenders" of the Nazi citadel surrendered to the Red Army.
