THE ROLE OF STATE LEADERS IN FORMING THE AMERICAN-RUSSIAN RELATIONS IN 1992–2000

Abstract

The present article is devoted to the analysis of the U.S.-Russian relations from the period of 1992 to 2000. The chronological framework of the study is determined by the periods of Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin’ presidency. Author identifies three conditional stages in the formation and development of the U.S.-Russian relations, either of which includes important, from the point of view of bilateral contacts, events of both domestic political nature and the international agenda on the context of the behavior or reaction of the Unites States and the Russian Federation to them. The author focuses on the main approaches and strategies that the representatives of the U.S. President Bill Clinton Administration have used in forming the foreign policy line in relations with Russia. The deep analysis of the agreements and bilateral documents concluded between the United States of America and the Russian Federation in the period from 1992 to 2000 shows that America had a significant impact on the development of the political and economic situation in Russia. Ultimately, such diplomatic landscape contributed to the strengthening of anti-Western sentiments in the late 1990s as well as the worsening of the bilateral relations.
