The Image of Hercules on a Silver Vase of the IV century B.C. from Chastye Kurgany (on the Semantics of Images)

The article is devoted to the historical interpretation of the image of Hercules on the famous Voronezh silver vase from Chastye Kurgany near Voronezh, found in 1911, with images of the hero talking with three warriors in Scythian clothes. The study of the monument has a long historiographical tradition, starting with Acad. M.I. Rostovtsev. Based on a comparison of mythological data on a close range of problems, most fully set out in the ancient tradition by Diodorus Siculus, and evidence from the ancient tradition, it is suggested that the Hellenic-Scythian legend about the origin of the Scythians is reflected in its images, the meaning and content of which dates back to the times of the Greco-Aryan cultural communities in the steppe and forest-steppe territories of Eastern Europe. This conclusion is based on extensive argumentation and broad analogies from Indo-Iranian tradition. The work continues the series of publications by the author about the ancient Indo-European connections of the Greek, Iranian and Indo-Aryan traditions, which left traces in ancient mythology and monuments of the fine arts of Eastern Europe.
