Marcus Claudius Marcellus and the Roman War Against the Insubres

The article is devoted to the consideration of the role of Marcus Claudius Marcellus in the Roman war against the Insubres in 222 B.C. A few years before the beginning of the Second Punic War the old enemies Gauls invaded the limits of Roman influence. Since 225 B.C. during the struggle with the enemy the Romans carried out expansion in the valley of the Po River, rich in fertile land. Due to the latter the plebeians problems of shortage arable land were partially solved. In 222 B.C. Marcus Claudius Marcellus was elected consul for the first time. In the war with the Gallic tribe of Insubres he first proved himself as a commander. During the fighting Marcellus defeated the leader of the enemy, Viridomarus, in a personal duel and took off his armor, later presented to the gods. By the news of the death of the enemy leader, Marcellus, according to sources, forced the Insubrian city of Mediolan, besieged by his colleague Scipio Calvus, to surrender. Consequently, Marcellus played a decisive role in this war.
