Female Influence in the Late Antique Family in the Letters of Paulinus of Nola

The article analyzes the cases of female influence in family in the correspondence of Paulinus of Nola. In letters addressed to his comrades, women's influence is aimed mainly at the Christianization of men, and its assessment is determined by the author's attitude to religion and asceticism. The main types of such influence are identified: a woman’s influence on her husband’s views up to the point of accepting joint asceticism, support of his spiritual aspirations and strengthening of religious determination throughout their life together, as well as the woman’s taking on household responsibilities in order to free time of her husband for matters of faith. In addition, the death of a Christian wife is the most important factor prompting a man to reconsider his life attitudes.
