Abstract

In this article, we are going to explore the key points in the biography of the commander Flavius Belisarius. We will also consider debatable issues that can be identified in historiography. The purpose of the study is to analyze the milestones of the commander's biography, his role in the events of domestic and foreign policy during the reign of Justinian the Great. We have considered such events as the Nika uprising of 532, the policy of the restoration of the empire, as well as the military campaigns of the commander. In addition to the figure of Belisarius, such personalities as the eunuch Narses, as well as other field commanders, were indirectly affected. The article includes 3 sections: 1) The question of the origin of Flavius Belisarius; 2) Role in the Nika uprising of 532; 3) Belisarius and the policy of the restoration of the empire. Sections include detailed historiographical analyses. We considered the specifics of the sources. Particular attention was paid to a detailed analysis of the works of Procopius of Caesarea.
