Abstract

The article examines the economic elite of Honduras as an example of a less developed country in historical perspective as well as its influence on the political system of the country. The author analyses the evolution of national business, especially its transformation from agrarian to agrarian-industrial economic model. The study pays special attention to the factor of external influence: US corporations and Middle Eastern immigration to Central America. Also the article considers specific traits of interaction of the Honduran elite with the state apparatus and the relationship with American capital, which dominates the economic life of the country. Throughout the history Honduran elite competed with international companies over state control. Due to social and economic limitations local business depends on the US economy and finances which restrains the development of national economic groups. The analysis concludes that the capital of Honduras is highly adaptive and flexible under constantly changing domestic and global context. At the same time local entrepreneurs concentrate on internal development due to the inability to carry out external economic expansion. Therefore the Honduran business elite follows the organic model of business development in the less developed countries within the world economy.
