Kroja in the Politics of the Venetian Republic in the Late XIV – Early XV Centuries

This study is devoted to the analysis of the policy of the Republic of Venice in relation to the city of Kroja, which is located in Albania. This city and its fortress were not located on the Adriatic coast, but still seriously interested in Venice. The reason for this was Kroja's strategic position. The Kroja's fortress was a reliable defense of the center of the Venetian possessions in Albania - the city of Dyrrachium. Based on the available Venetian sources, a picture of the policy of the Venetian Republic aimed at obtaining Kroja was formed. The chronological framework of the study is from 1392 to 1404, from the first attempt to draw the ruler of Kroja into the orbit of his influence to the conclusion of an agreement with Niketa Topia at the beginning of the 15th century. As a result, the process of inclusion of a separate Albanian territory into the sphere of political and economic influence of the Venetian Republic is shown. Venice expanded its possessions, subordinating economically advantageous lands. First of all, this concerns the towns-communes of the Dalmatian coast.
