Speculatores Augusti: Organizational Structure and Functions

The Speculatores Augusti were a special unit of the Praetorian Guard. Initially the corps was a cohort of spies and bodyguards under the triumvirs. Afterwards the Speculatores were an Intelligence Service. The historians do not have established view about command and organizational structure. Discussions are mainly around the Trecenarius, the size of the unit and when the Speculatores were included in the Praetorian Guard. We propose to consider the Speculatores as part of the Garrison of Rome. It determined a structure and functions. The Praetorian Guard often changed, but now we do not understand entirely the reason. All the history of the corps fits into one trend that defined the history of the garrison of Rome: the strengthening of the specialization of the corps. Separate study of career paths is still required for both Augusti speculators and soldiers from other special divisions. We try to find out in this work what position the Augusti speculators occupied in the garrison of Rome and what exact functions this corps performed from the end of the 1st century. до н. э. and follow 312 A.
