Venetian Ambassador Giacomo Soranzo on the parliaments of France in the 50s of the XVI century

The paper analyzes the final report (Relazione) of the Venetian ambassador Giacomo Soranzo, accredited to the court of the French King Henry II in 1554–1558. The author focuses on the plot of the final report on the parliaments of France. Special attention was paid in the reports of the Venetian ambassadors, and in particular Giacomo Soranzo, to the coverage of the implementation of justice in those countries where they were accredited. Informing his government about the situation in France in
1554–1558, Giacomo Soranzo also touched on such an institution of the political system of this country as parliaments – the highest courts in France of the XV–XVIII centuries. According to him, there are ten of them; among them, the main one is the Paris Parliament. The Venetian characterizes the structure of the parliament, its composition, powers, and functions. This information, given by the ambassador, can be assumed to have helped the Venetian government to be aware of the specifics of the political development of the French state.
