The article deals with issues connected to the relations between Christians and Jews mainly in Italy during the pontificate of Gregory I the Great. Based on the material of Pope Gregory's letters, it is shown that the pontiff, in his relations with the Jews, sought to ensure compliance with the laws both on the part of the authorities and Christians, and on the part of the Jews. By the power of his authority, he defended synagogues from their spontaneous seizure, as well as the right of Jews to practice religious worship, at the same time he fought against attempts by Jews to keep Christian slaves and trade them. It is proved that the relatively tolerant position of Pope Gregory is dictated by the desire to preserve internal peace in the face of external threats. It is obvious that Grigory, as a writer, belonged to the literary tradition formed long before him, for which anti-Jewish rhetoric was a necessary part of building a Christian identity. In our article, we would like to confine ourselves mainly to Italy during the pontificate of Grigory the Great.
