Abstract

In the title «Tactics» by Nicephorus Uranus (ca. 950 to after 1007), a work of one Alcibiades is mentioned among the various sources of Uranus’ book. Most likely, this work was written or attributed to Alcibiades, the son of Cleinius, to the Athenian politician and strategist of the last quarter of the 5th century BC. Probably, this Alcibiades’ work could be the strategy of an experienced general. The most probable assumption seems to be that Nicephorus Uranus had in mind some kind of military didactic treatise or a short military-historical essay, or even a letter that was really written by the son of Klinius, or it was simply attributed to him. Uranus may have become acquainted with this rare Alcibiades’ essay when he was secretary to the Emperor Basil II Porphyrogenitus (976–1025) in Constantinople and could use the state archives (before 980 to 997). Master Nicephorus Uranus (c. 950 – after 1007) was the imperial secretary, and later the Duke of Antioch (in 999 – between 1007 and 1011). The very same "Tactics" is the last extensive compilation work (178 chapters) of Byzantine military theory, in fact, an encyclopedia of military affairs, written in the 1000s.
