Abstract

The Civil War of 68–69 A. D. (historiographical term: «The Year of the Four Emperors») showed, in the words of Tacitus, «imperii arcano»: the princeps could be made not only in Rome. During the first phase of the strife the main force was the Praetorian guard. But after April 69 A. D. legions determined the fate of the Empire. We will approach to the beginning of the «long 69 A. D.» – the events concerned with to the activities of Nymphidius Sabinus. He was commander of the Praetorian Guard as Praetorian Prefect from 65–68 A. D. We barely know anything about his career before praefectura praetorio. Ancient tradition has recorded the belonging of Sabinus in two conspiracies: against Nero and Galba. On the ground of the written accounts of Titus Flavius Josephus, Publius Cornelius Tacitus, Plutarch, Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, Cassius Dio, we have come to the conclusion, that Nymphidius played a decisive difference in the overthrow of Nero. But Sabinus was not involved in the «conspiracy» against Galba. Nymphidius was marginalized position and did not have opportunities and supporting for struggle against Galba and provincial armies.
