Germany – USA: the path to a «balanced partnership» (1945–2020)

Abstract

The article examines the evolution of relations between Germany and the United States since 1945 by 2020. Initially, this was a relationship between the victorious power in World War II and the defeated country. After the formation of the Federal Republic of Germany, these relations gradually acquired the character of partnership, although unequal. With the arrival of the Trump administration in the us White house, there was a crisis in bilateral relations, although there were already certain prerequisites for this. In August 2018, the German leadership set a goal – to move in relations with the United States of America to a «balanced partnership». The American factor remains one of the most important in the system of German foreign policy interests. Germany continues transatlantic cooperation through political dialogue, implementation of economic projects, expansion of contacts through civil societies, interaction in international organizations, but intends to firmly defend its national interests.
