Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the meaning of the term oἱ Καμπανοἱ in Greek writers‟ works. We meet this term in Pseudo-Skilacus, Polybius, Diodorus of Siculus, Dionysius of Halicarnassus, Strabo, Pausanias, Dionysius Periegetus. The author comes to conclusion that there are three interpretations of the term «campanians» in these works. According to the first one, this is an ethnic group different from the Greeks and Samnites, living not only on the plain, but also on the coast of Campania. The second meaning of the term: campanians are residents of the city of Capua. The third meaning of the term – campanians – all inhabitants of the Campania region – appeared in Greek authors‟ writings in the first century and was associated with Augustus‟ administrativе reform. In the sources reviewed, we do not find the use of the term «οἱ Καμπανοἱ» in the meaning of «residents of the cities of the Campanian League». The article also discusses the historiography of the issue.
